Black Holes and Time Warps
Great account of the development of general relativity, the best theory we have to describe gravity, by one of the key figures involved in its study (Thorne was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in relativity). I highly recommend it as a companion for anyone doing a course in General Relativity, which was the context I read it in.
I love situating physics theories in their historical context — I think it’s very instructive to understand the years of incremental progress it took to put together the polished, condensed version of the theory one learns in the classroom.
The ‘time warps’ section was small and not central to the book; it would’ve been more accurate to leave it out of the title, but I suppose it could be a marketing thing.
